Leonbergers sudden death research
University on Helsinki and Folkhälsani research group has started a project looking into leonbergers sudden death cases.
Too many young leonbergers (6-24 months) die suddenly without having any clinical sign beforehand. Sudden death can be caused by heart failure but since this is getting too common now in our breed there is a possibility that there is a genetic background to it. The objective of the study is to find genetic reasons for the death and possibly work out genetic tests to help breeder use these when making breeding selections.
